Cleansing your home is important to clear out negative or unwanted energies. It is a good idea to do this on a regular basis, as well as after spellwork and rituals. There are several methods you can use to cleanse your home, so find the one that works best for you and incorporate it into your routine.
When you are using a method of cleansing that requires you to move through your home, always start at you front door. Move clockwise around your home, ensuring the smoke, spray, or sound reaches every corner and cupboard. When you have reached the place where you started cleansing, you can move on to the other floors of your home.
Remember: Open your windows before beginning to allow the energies (and smoke) to escape.
Smoke Cleansing
This usually involves burning bundles of cleansing herbs, but can also be done with incense. The bundle of herbs (or alternative) is lit, and the smoke is fanned into every corner of the home. If you are using this method , make sure to hold a fireproof dish under your burning herbs or incense to be as safe as possible.
Some of the herbs that can be used for smoke cleansing are: Common Sage, Juniper, Rosemary, Pine, Lavender, Rose, or Bay Leaf.
Salt Cleansing
This is quite a simple and low energy way to cleanse your home. Place a line of salt across all of the entrances to your home, including windows and chimneys. Additionally, you can place a bowl of salt on your altar or in the centre of your home, to absorb and dispel negative or unwanted energies.
Remember: Replace the salt regularly and dispose of it outside your home.
Cleansing Sprays
These are a good alternative to smoke cleansing, for when burning herbs is impractical, unsafe, or not possible. They are typically made by filling a spray bottle with Witch Hazel or Florida Water and may have essential oils in them too. Use as a room spray or even as a perfume.
Some of the essential oils you can add to a cleansing spray are: Sage, Cedar, Lemon, Lavender, or Rosemary.
Sound Cleansing
You can do this by clapping your hands, singing, ringing bells, whistling, or drumming. You could even shake a bag full of coins. Try different sounds until you find one that works best for you.
Crystal Cleansing
Cleansing with crystals is a good option for those who are not able to be open about their craft. Place crystals around your home, near entrances and in the corners. Selenite is a great Crystal to use as it doesn't need to be cleansed itself, owing to its ability to absorb and dissipate negative energy. You can also use Black Tourmaline, Clear Quartz, or Haematite, although these will need to be cleansed and charged regularly.
Creating a Herb Bundle
Before harvesting, sit near the plant and make your intentions known. Pick the plant material respectfully, and don't take too much.
Herbs can either be bound together fresh and dried out (although if your bundle is too large it may not dry well and can run the risk of mold), or left to dry beforehand. Hold the herbs tightly before weaving string or twine around them in a spiral. Fold the top leaves over, then bind them down and secure the string.
Once the bundle is dry, light the end until it is slightly smouldering. Place it in a fireproof dish and carefully carry it around your home.
Smoke Cleansing Chant
Repeat in each room as you are cleansing:
"Through this smoke I send away
Unwanted energies, you may not stay
Smoke fills each corner, nook and niche
No hiding place beyond it's reach.
With this smoke I cleanse and clear
All energy not welcome here
Through this smoke I send away
Unwanted energies, you cannot stay"
You could modify this chant to use with your method. Simply swap the word smoke and replace with a word that fits your method (e.g. salt, sound, spray).
